Interior Minister vows crackdown on beggars and street dwellers

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has reaffirmed his ministry’s determination to remove beggars, street dwellers, and prostitutes from Ghana’s major cities in a renewed effort to restore order and enhance public safety.

Speaking in Tamale during the commissioning of a new 24-unit apartment block for the Ghana Immigration Service, Muntaka announced that a nationwide operation targeting five key cities, including Tamale, will soon be launched in collaboration with security agencies.

He revealed that a recent swoop in Accra resulted in the arrest of over 2,000 foreign beggars, nearly half of whom have already been repatriated.

The remaining individuals are expected to be processed and removed by the end of the week.

“These individuals are not just a public nuisance, they pose a real threat to national security,” the minister said.

The Minister also issued a firm warning to prostitutes operating openly on city streets, stating they would be targeted next. He urged them to leave voluntarily or face forced removal and repatriation.

“We’re not going to relent. Whether it’s beggars or prostitutes, we will pursue and remove all of them. This government is committed to restoring decency and order in our cities,” he declared.
