The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to immediately transfer all police commanders in mining areas as part of measures to combat illegal mining, commonly called galamsey.

During a recent meeting with Imams and Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, the minister emphasised the government’s dedication to addressing this issue, which has significantly affected water bodies and agricultural lands throughout the nation.

“I have ordered the IGP to transfer all police commanders in all mining areas and send in new ones. So if you are a regional, divisional, or district police commander serving in mining areas, you will be changed with immediate effect,” he noted.

He also stated that the new officers assigned to these areas would undergo rigorous monitoring and evaluation based on their performance.

“The new ones we are taking there will be transferred after three months if they don’t perform. We will keep making changes till we see results,” he emphasised.
