Resources inadequate to support all flood victims – NADMO

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says it is struggling to provide enough relief to the thousands of people displaced by the devastating floods that hit parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18.

According to Samuel Aboagye, NADMO’s Deputy Director General of Protocol and Relief, the agency’s current stock of relief items is not sufficient to support everyone affected.

He explained that while emergency teams are working across affected communities, their response efforts are limited by resource constraints.

“Our team is on the ground to monitor the situation. If it is 10, 100 or 50 people who are critically affected, we are going to help those people. But the truth is, we do not have enough resources to help everyone when disasters hit us hard,” he said.

So far, NADMO reports that over 3,000 people have been displaced. Four lives have also been lost, one in Abokobi and three in Adenta.

The flood followed nearly three hours of intense rainfall, which began around 3:00 p.m. and caught many residents during peak commuting hours.

Communities such as Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, and parts of Tema and Dodowa were left submerged, with roads blocked and vehicles stranded.

Despite the lack of resources, NADMO remains on the ground assessing needs and registering affected residents.

Aboagye appealed for patience from those impacted, promising that support would be given as supplies become available.

Speaking on May 20, he also urged the public to stay alert and avoid flood-prone areas, especially during the rainy season, to reduce further casualties and damage.
