The Minister of Trade and Industry, KT Hammond, has indicated that the government’s proposed import restrictions bill on 22 commodities is not intended to create food shortages but rather to encourage local production and consumption.
He emphasized that this measure is not a ban, but rather a strategic initiative to promote domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.
However, during proceedings on Thursday, November 23, the Speaker, Alban Bagbin suspended the Legislative Instrument(L.I.) ruling that Mr. Hammond go back and deal with concerns relating to the L.I. before it was laid before the House.
“Leadership, try to resolve these matters before we move on because we are dealing with instruments. And you know the impact of these instruments; that is why I am saying we should try and resolve them,” Mr. Bagbin said
The Minority Caucus, led by Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, explained that the regulation was not in the best interest of the country.
