I’m a professional police officer; I don’t do politics!- IGP Dampare
Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare has emphatically stated that he is a professional police officer who does not engage in politics.
Dr. Dampare made this statement while addressing some concerns raised by some of his colleagues in the police service before the parliament ad-hoc committee, indicating that he supports the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) and that his position as an IGP will hinder the incumbent government[NPP] from maintaining power in the 2024 general elections.
The IGP speaking to the parliament ad-hoc committee probing the leaked tape on September, 12 noted that any allegation that has been made about him being a police officer actively involved in politics is false and should be disregarded by the public.
“This is also an allegation made to make it look like I am a policeman doing politics. I am a policeman who works professionally and does not do politics. It is falsehood, yes…it is falsehood. It is a lie so they should stop it”.
Dr. Dampare also debunked claims of having a tight relationship with former President John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC).
“Honourable Chair, the position of an IGP is to serve the good people of this country of which the former President is one of them and there’s no problem with that”.
“But there is a clear distinction between the case when something is not true and some people want to make it look like it’s true and that is shameful”.
He added that he doesn’t visit former President John Mahama and Mahama doesn’t visit him either.
The presence of the IGP before the committee was a call by security analysts and the public who believe Dampare should also be granted the opportunity to address the allegations made against him by former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, COP George Alex Mensah, Emmanuel Eric Gyebi and George Lysander Asare, both Superintendents when they appeared before the committee probing the leaked tape.
