In a move that will boost the operations of spare parts dealers in Ghana, the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised a flat rate duty for importers of car spare parts.
The NPP flagbearer made this known during his address to outline his vision for Ghana on Wednesday, February 7.
Dr Bawumia announced a myriad of measures to develop the country and spur growth, including some incentives that will be welcomed at Abossey Okai and Suame.
“Tema port will be fully automated and benchmarked to be as efficient as some of the best ports in the world like Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai.
“Also, there will be a new policy of aligning the duties and charges at the Tema port to the duties and charges at Lome Port.
“Basically, duties and charges at the Tema Port should not be higher than Lome, our main competitor. This will also reduce smuggling and tax avoidance. Also, for spare parts importers, duties will be a flat rate per container,” he revealed.
Spare parts dealers at Abossey Okai had expressed dissatisfaction with the incumbent government for several months, citing numerous taxes that negatively affect their businesses.
Consequently, they called on the government to reverse some policies and taxes, eroding their profits.
Dr Bawumia’s vision for the country as he seeks the mandate of Ghanaians to be president has addressed their concerns with additional measures to spur growth in the private and informal sectors.
