I’ll Be A Dependable Partner To The Judiciary – Akufo-Addo To Chief Justice Torkornoo
President Nana Akufo-Addo has affirmed his unwavering commitment to supporting the newly sworn-in Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
In his address on Monday, June 12, President Akufo-Addo stressed the need for a strong collaboration between the Executive and the Judiciary.
“I want to assure Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo that just as I did with her predecessor, I will be a dependable and trustworthy partner of the judiciary so that the Executive and the Judiciary can work together in the spirit of mutual respect to consolidate the tenets of good governance for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.
“The appointment of a new Chief Justice is taking place at a time when our nation is attempting to overcome challenges that have arisen from external factors beyond our control. It is our collective duty to work together, with different views and perspectives, for the betterment of the Ghanaian project,” he indicated.
In her acceptance speech, the newly appointed Chief Justice said she is deeply humbled and grateful for the nomination.
“As I stand before you today, I am well aware that I am following in the footsteps of remarkable individuals who have occupied this position before me. The Chief Justices who have come before me, with their wisdom, dedication, and unwavering commitment to justice, have laid a strong foundation for me to build upon.
“I acknowledge that I stand on extremely tall shoulders, and I pledge to carry their legacy forward with utmost respect and diligence,” she said.
The swearing-in ceremony, attended by dignitaries from various sectors of society, marked a crucial moment in Ghana’s judicial history.
Chief Justice Torkornoo was approved by Parliament on June 7, 2023, after the Appointments Committee submitted its report.
Both sides of the house agreed she possessed the qualifications necessary to serve as Chief Justice.
Having served at the High Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court, she brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished track record to her new role.
