IGP Removal Plot: Bugri Naabu Invented A Story Against Me – Superintendent Asare

Superintendent George Asare, one of the senior police officers implicated in the alleged ‘IGP leaked tape’ has disclosed that the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, invented stories against him.

Appearing before a committee tasked to probe the matter on Monday, September 4, Superintendent Asare claimed that some of the comments attributed to him were the invention of Bugri Naabu.

Bugri Naabu claimed that Supt Asare introduced Supt Gyebi to him and he [Supt Gyebi] was supposed to meet him [Chief Bugri Naabu] at Afrikiko in Accra to proceed to a meeting with President Nana Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House.

But Supt. Asare stated that the assertion is false.

“Mr Chairman that is not true. I will be eager to go and meet the president my self when granted the opportunity.”

According to him, Chief Naabu called him for a meeting at his office, where the former NPP northern regional chairman informed him that the Akufo-Addo government was scouting for a new IGP and asked him for recommendations.

He then made three recommendations to Bugri Naabu.

“I went to Mr Naabu’s office on his invitation….He told me, ‘Commander, they are looking for a new IGP, so do you have somebody in mind that you can recommend?’ and I told him, of course, yes. So he asked me who that candidate was, and I mentioned Commissioner of Police George Alex Mensah’s name to him and then made him know about his credentials”.

“He told me that ‘apart from him, if I go and tell the appointing authorities and it backfires, who else can you recommend?’ I recommended three other senior officers, COP Mr Ernest Owusu, Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah and Christian Tetteh Yuhuno,” Supt. Asare stated.

Supt. Asare also confirmed that the said meeting, which was recorded by Mr Bugri Naabu, took place on June 19, 2023.

He said it was at the office of Chief Naabu that the said meeting between himself [Asare], Bugri Naabu, and Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah took place, during which the said recording was secretly done without they not being aware.

Chief Naabu confirmed the authenticity of the content of the leaked audio tape when he appeared before the committee on Monday, August 28.

Following the appearance of Bugri Naabu, two police officers, Supt Emmanuel Gyebi and key witness Commissioner George Alex Mensah, have both been grilled by the ad-hoc parliamentary committee.
