IGP orders probe into use of police car for NPP campaign

The police hierarchy has sanctioned a probe into the use of its vehicle for partisan campaign activities.

In a disclaimer, the Ghana police said it does not condone activities of such nature and those found culpable would be sanctioned.

“The Inspector-General of Police, Mr James Oppong-Boanuh has therefore directed the Director-General Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to investigate and bring up a report on the matter, for officers who are found culpable to be sanctioned accordingly,” a statement from the police said on Friday, October 2, 2020.

The release added that the police was “committed to its avowed principle of impartiality”.

This follows the circulation of videos and pictures on social media which captured a police pick-up vehicle carrying a handful of men and women dressed in the colours and paraphernalia of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The location from which the video was taken is not yet known but two people were seen carrying flags of the NPP on the Nissan Navara vehicle with registration number GP 3852 GH.

The development has already drawn the ire of the flagbearer of the opposition NDC, former President John Dramani Mahama who described the incident as “unacceptable conduct and unprofessional.”

In his view, “The bastardization of our institutions is one of the outcomes of this failed leadership”.

Campaigns have been taken a notch higher as political parties and candidates contesting the 2020 elections canvass for votes.

President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia are touring various parts of the country likewise their opponents former President Mahama and his running mate Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
