The Ghana Police Service has debunked claims that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been removed from office.
“We would like to urge the public to disregard this fake news and treat same with the contempt it deserves. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) remains committed to his patriotic duty of leading the Ghana Police Service as per the mandate given him by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo,” a release by the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Grace Ansah-Akrofi said on Sunday, June 30.
The reports gained traction on social media following the conclusion of the probe into a leaked tape, which captured a plot by some senior police officers to remove the IGP from office ahead of the 2024 polls.
The committee tasked with investigating the matter has submitted the final report and its recommendations to Parliament, and it is awaiting a decision by the Speaker of Parliament.
The committee, chaired by Abuakwa South MP Samuel Atta Akyea, was tasked to investigate the authenticity of a leaked tape.
Three police officers, COP George Alex Mensah (retired), Superintendent George Asare, Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi, and Daniel Bugri Naabu, a former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were implicated in the alleged IGP tape.
