ICC to launch 2021 Rules of Arbitration in Anglophone Africa

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) is scheduled to unveil the 2021 Rules of Arbitration on May 11, to address trade disputes.

The rules will be launched virtually in Anglophone Africa by the President of the International Court of Arbitration, Alexis Mourre and the Attorney General of Ghana Godfred Dame.

The ICC published the ninth iteration of its arbitration rules (the 2021 Rules) on December 1, 2020, and came into force on January 1 2021.

The rules define and regulate the management of cases received by the International Court of Arbitration® from January 1, 2021.

The ICC Arbitration Rules are used all around the world to resolve disputes.

They assure parties of a neutral framework for the resolution of cross-border disputes.

The rules introduce a number of amendments to increase transparency and minimise the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on proceedings, as well as new specific provisions for complex arbitrations and investment treaty disputes.

Other Speakers for the event include Ms Ndanga Kamau, President ICC Africa Commission, Ms Valentina Mintah, Executive Board Member of ICC, Dr Babatunde Ajibade, Nigeria, Kizito Beyuo Ghana, Thierry Ngoga, Rwanda, Nieri Kariuki, Kenya, Sébastien Pépin and Ms Marietta Appiah-Opong Member, ICC International Court of Arbitration.

This launch will present the pioneering positions taken by the ICC International Court of Arbitration in this ninth revision of its arbitration Rules, thus placing ICC at the forefront of change in international arbitration.

With the 2021 Rules, the ICC has taken a step forward to increase the efficiency and transparency of arbitral proceedings.

In addition, the 2021 Rules helpfully clarify and refine the language of certain provisions, as well as codify the ICC’s current practice.

The International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (“ICC”) is the independent arbitration body of ICC.

Arbitration practitioners from Anglophone Africa are invited to attend this webinar.

Panellists will discuss the increased powers given to the ICC International Court of Arbitration in the 2021 Rules of Arbitration, in order to ensure that the integrity of the proceedings is preserved at all times.
