I wish my father was here – Victorious Zanetor pays tribute to late Rawlings

Dr Zanetor Agyamang-Rawlings, the first daughter of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings has expressed regret that her father could not live to witness her victory of winning a second-term bid as MP for Korle-Klottey.

“it is a mixture of feelings. I wish my dad was here but such is life,” the young MP who is mourning the death of her father told the media.

Zanetor, who contested on the ticket of the party her father founded, retained her seat after polling 39,343 out of the total valid vote cast of 70,687.

Her closest contender was the NPP’s Prince Appiah Debrah, who had 31,154 votes.

The LPG parliamentary candidate garnered 190 votes.

While alive, Mr Rawlings was arguably cheerleader of Ms Agyeman-Rawlings, the only one among her siblings to continue her parents’ political dynasty.

The NDC won the presidential election in the area with 37,189 votes, while the NPP had 33,126 votes.

Zanetor said a lot of work has gone into the elections campaigns and was thankful to God and everyone who had worked to ensure the victory.

She hopes to focus on development and skills training in her next term.

Former President Rawlings died on November 12, 2020, barely a month to the polls and yet to be buried.

The event slowed down the campaign activities of Zanetor’s mother who spilt from the NDC to form her own party.

Former First Lady and flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, believes the victorious candidate in the 2020 elections could be determined within 24 hrs.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Electoral Commission is set to announce the 2020 presidential results in some few hours.

The Chairperson of the commission, Mrs Jean Mensa, is set to address the nation at 5 pm at the Accra International Conference Centre.

This is in fulfilment of her promise to declare the results within 24 hours.

The venue is now a national security zone, with a joint military and patrol team hoarding off the area and ensuring tight security.
