I have no issues with Ahiafor, we’re adjusting – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has denied claims of a personal feud between himself and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Bernard Ahiafor following a recent clash during a vetting session.

The disagreement took place on June 18, 2025, during the Appointments Committee’s vetting of Supreme Court nominee Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.

Afenyo-Markin had posed a question that Ahiafor, who was chairing the session, ruled as repetitive and procedurally out of order.

He instructed the nominee not to answer, which led to a strong objection and a tense exchange between the two lawmakers.

Speaking in an interview on August 1, Afenyo-Markin clarified that the incident was not a sign of hostility but rather a reflection of leaders adjusting to new roles within Parliament.

“I think we are all adjusting. It is the first time Ahiafor is serving as First Deputy Speaker and it is also my first time as Minority Leader,” he said. “The same applies to Mahama Ayariga as Majority Leader.”

He said disagreements are a normal part of working in a democratic space and should not be interpreted as personal conflicts.

“I do not take some of those issues personally. I am sure they also have issues with my approach, but we are getting used to each other,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin expressed optimism that the parliamentary leadership would continue to grow in cohesion and cooperation over time.

He said all parties involved are committed to improving collaboration for the benefit of the legislative process and national governance.
