Award-winning journalist Godwin Asediba has revealed that he secured his role with BBC News | Focus on Africa before winning the prestigious BBC News Komla Dumor Award.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey, Asediba explained that his journey to the BBC role began even before the award recognition.
According to him, he first applied for the journalist position at BBC News | Focus on Africa and submitted his application for the Komla Dumor Award about two weeks later.
He disclosed that both processes ran almost simultaneously, noting that while he was being interviewed for the job, he was also undergoing interviews for the award, though by different panels and individuals.
Reflecting on his new role, Asediba described it as deeply personal and meaningful. He said it has always been his dream to walk in the path of the late Komla Dumor, whom he believes left behind a strong legacy in African journalism.
Asediba admitted that he finds it difficult to fully express how he feels about the opportunity but emphasized that he is genuinely happy and fulfilled.
He added that his career journey has been progressive, and this new chapter represents growth built over time rather than an overnight success.
Godwin Asediba announced that he’s joined BBC News | Focus on Africa after exiting Media General, where he worked across TV3, 3FM, and 3news.com.
He is also the 2025 BBC News Komla Dumor Award winner, GJA Overall Best Journalist of the Year 2024, and an International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) Award winner.
