“I Couldn’t Find a Job in the UK” – Sister Derby on Struggles and Returning to Ghana

Singer Sister Derby has shared her frustrating experience of trying to secure employment in the United Kingdom, despite holding a master’s degree.

On 3Music TV’s Big Conversation, the “Kakalika Love” hitmaker opened up about the difficulties she faced while living in the UK, explaining how her aspirations were hindered by a series of unfortunate events.

She revealed that she lost her £700 internship and, despite applying to numerous positions across various sectors, found it nearly impossible to land a job.

“I applied for so many jobs but couldn’t get one,” Sister Derby said. “I went to multiple job interviews at big publishing companies, but I wasn’t called back. I also registered with job agencies, but nothing came through.”

Adding to her struggle, her professor informed her that the ongoing UK recession significantly reduced the number of available job opportunities for non-citizens.

“The recession was tough, especially for someone like me who wasn’t a UK citizen,” she said, noting how it further limited her chances.

Faced with a lack of prospects and no job offers, Sister Derby made the tough decision to return to Ghana in January 2010.

Reflecting on her choice, she recalled taking one of the last Ghana Airways flights back, marking her return to her home country to seek new opportunities.

“I decided to go back home and start fresh, hoping to find better opportunities in Ghana,” she shared.

Her story sheds light on the challenges faced by many international students and professionals who find it hard to secure work abroad, even with impressive qualifications and experience.
