I am not against the Accra to Kumasi Expressway – Asenso Boakye
Former Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso Boakye, has clarified that he is not opposed to the proposed Accra to Kumasi Expressway, saying his position is being misunderstood.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, Mr Asenso Boakye explained that his concerns are rooted in proper planning rather than resistance to development.
He described the corridor between Accra and Kumasi as a vital national route that supports trade, mobility and economic growth, noting that any serious policymaker would recognise its importance.
He, however, drew attention to the ongoing Accra to Kumasi Highway project, which he said has already made significant progress, currently standing at about 64 per cent completion.
According to him, many Ghanaians fear that pushing ahead with a new expressway without clear safeguards could lead to the abandonment of the existing road project.
In that regard, he welcomed assurances from President John Dramani Mahama that the current highway will be completed alongside the proposed expressway.
Mr Asenso Boakye also raised concerns about the process being followed so far, pointing out that Parliament has not yet seen a completed feasibility study, a final engineering design, a confirmed project cost or a clearly defined route alignment.
Despite these gaps, lawmakers are being asked to approve a concession agreement.
He warned that large-scale infrastructure projects require patience and discipline to protect the public purse and deliver real value, saying, “Prudence, proper sequencing, and due diligence are not obstacles to development; they are essential safeguards for value for money and fiscal sustainability”.
He concluded by stressing that while the vision is welcome, transparency and thorough preparation must come before any final commitments are made.
