The 50th Anniversary celebration of the Holy Family Akan Kuo of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Madina, coincided with the Feast of the Holy Family, providing a timely reminder of the importance of love and respect in marriage.
The Holy Family Akan Kuo, a society of Akan-speaking Catholics, has a rich history dating back to the early days of the church. Established as St. Cecilia’s Guild, a singing band, the society has evolved over the years to become a beacon of unity, love, and cooperation among its members.
The society’s history is marked by its commitment to philanthropic works, including visiting the vulnerable, church donations, and sports competitions. In 2019, the society was rebranded as Holy Family Akan Kuo, with the Holy Family as its patron saint.
Bishop Joseph Afrifah Agyekum of the Koforidua Diocese delivered a sermon, emphasizing the need for husbands to love their wives, rather than focusing solely on the concept of submission. The Bishop’s message was a refreshing departure from the often-misinterpreted notion of submission, which can be used to control or dominate one’s partner. “When love leads, submission often follows naturally,” he said. “A husband who truly loves his wife would never abuse her.”

Bishop Agyekum stressed that marriage is a challenging journey that requires effort and commitment from both partners. “Marriage is not easy, it has never been easy, and it will never be easy,” he said, advising couples to take time to get to know each other and avoid rushing into marriage.
The Bishop also highlighted the importance of marriage counseling and choosing a partner based on more than just physical beauty. “Prayer is key to making marriage successful,” he emphasized.
COP Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, Chairperson of the 50th Anniversary celebration and Ekuona (Society Mother), echoed the Bishop’s sentiments, urging all Ghanaians to resolve to be good citizens and contribute to the development of Ghana. “Whether we work in the public or private sector, we should do what is right, go to work on time, and always do what we’ve been employed to do. Don’t say you are not in any leadership position, you are a leader wherever you find yourself. Let us all build Ghana together because that is all we have,” she said.
A Past Chairman for the Holy Family Akan Kuo Youth Patrick Amoah Sarfo who is also a Founding Member in an interview on the sidelines of the programme said the Bishop’s message resonated with him as he observed that many others also expressed appreciation for his emphasis on love and respect in marriage.
He also used the occassion to commend all Founding and current members for playing various roles to bring the Association this far.
The occassion was also used to award members who had played various roles in the Association. END
