An 11-year-old boy was found dead in the Ayitikope Dam in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta region.

Residents of Ayitikope discovered the body on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at about 3:30 pm.

According to an eyewitness and uncle of the deceased, who only gave his name as Mawunyo, the deceased, Elisha Saba and some other children were playing in the house when their parents left for a funeral in another community.

He said the children, numbering about five, left the house to swim in the dam.

Mr Jerry Etsey Agbo, the Assembly member of the area, said the victim allegedly drowned while they were all swimming in the dam.

He said the incident shocked the residents because such a tragedy had never happened since the dam’s construction.

The dam was constructed to enhance farming activities in the various communities where farming is predominant.

Meanwhile, Mr Agbo said the case has since been reported to the Akatsi South Police, and the body of the deceased has been deposited at the St. Paul’s Hospital Morgue for autopsy.

He also appealed to parents in the area to warn their children to desist from swimming in the dam.
