The Ho Central Mosque has been closed temporarily for two weeks following rising tensions within the Muslim community over a leadership dispute, a move authorities say is aimed at restoring calm and preventing further unrest.

The decision was taken by the Volta Regional Security Council in consultation with the Ministry of the Interior after an emergency meeting held on Monday, December 29, 2025.

The closure takes effect from Thursday, January 1, 2026.

At the centre of the dispute are competing claims to the position of Regional Chief Imam in Ho.

The situation, according to security officials, has created unease within the community and raised concerns about possible confrontations if left unresolved.

As part of the directive, the mosque premises have been declared a crime scene to allow investigators and mediators to work without interference.

Authorities insist the move is not meant to punish worshippers but to create a neutral space where dialogue can take place without pressure or heightened emotions.

In its statement, REGSEC explained that the pause in activities is intended to lower tensions and allow traditional and religious leaders the opportunity to engage all sides in meaningful discussions.

The council believes this approach will help rebuild trust and unity among members of the community.

“This decision has been taken solely in the interest of peace, unity and the long-term stability of the Muslim community in Ho,” the council said.

REGSEC has appealed to the two factions involved to remain calm and cooperate fully with mediation efforts during the period.

It also assured residents that the safety of worshippers and the sanctity of the mosque remain a top priority.
