High Court rejects Wontumi’s request for more disclosures
The Accra High Court has dismissed an application filed by lawyers for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly called Chairman Wontumi.
His legal team had asked the court to compel state prosecutors to release additional documents they believed were vital to preparing his defence.
The request followed an earlier sitting on 25 November 2025, when lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi notified the court that the team intended to seek further disclosures.
When the case was called again on Monday, 8 December, both sides presented their arguments.
Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem Sai urged the court to reject the application, insisting that the prosecution had met all its obligations.
After listening to the submissions, presiding judge Audrey Kocuvie-Tay ruled that the application had no basis and struck it out.
Speaking to journalists after the ruling, Mr Appiah-Kubi shared that the outcome strengthened the defence’s position.
“This ruling only confirms our belief that the prosecution does not have the documents we requested, and we are completely comfortable with the court’s decision,” he said.
Chairman Wontumi is currently facing a six-count criminal charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General in October.
The charges relate to alleged unauthorised mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region and cite key provisions of the Minerals and Mining Act.
He is standing trial alongside Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining Company Limited, the mining firm linked to him.
