President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, in his address at the 15th BRICS Summit, disclosed that from January 2024, the BRICS bloc will be joined by six other countries to make it 11.
The summit is on the theme ‘BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism’.
The 2023 BRICS Business Summit commenced on August 22 and is set to end on August 24 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The conference aims to strengthen cooperation and forge a robust international alliance designed to counteract Western influence.
The debate over expanding the BRICS bloc – made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – has topped the agenda at the summit in Johannesburg.
There have been divisions about whether expansion now is the best move.
The group wants to gain more influence in the world.
