HeFRA targets 200 unlicensed health facilities in Ashanti Region
The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has begun a major enforcement operation in the Ashanti Region, aiming to shut down 200 unregistered and unsafe health facilities.
The initiative is part of HeFRA’s broader effort to clean up the healthcare system and protect patients from unqualified practitioners and hazardous conditions.
During an interview in Kumasi, Head of Public Relations at HeFRA, Christabel Eyram Nuhoho, explained that the agency is responding to growing concerns from the public.
“We have received numerous complaints of medical negligence. After investigating, we ensured the victims got justice and in some cases, compensation,” she said.
She added that HeFRA is working closely with government investigative bodies to successfully prosecute individuals involved in illegal medical practices.
A 5-day enforcement exercise in Kumasi is already underway, targeting facilities operating without valid licences or failing to meet safety standards.
According to Nuhoho, public awareness of patient rights has improved significantly, leading to more accountability among medical professionals.
She also noted that many healthcare providers are now more cautious in their practice due to increased monitoring and education.
HeFRA, which is legally mandated to register, license, and monitor both public and private health facilities in Ghana, says its goal is to ensure all medical centres comply with national standards.
The agency believes these efforts will rebuild trust in the healthcare system and protect lives.
