Heavy security at EC, as NDC, PNC boycott IPAC meeting
There was heavy security presence at the Electoral Commission on Wednesday as the commission met political parties on its proposed voter registration exercise.
Three armoured vehicles and dozens of police personnel from the Formed Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service lined up the road leading to the entrance of the commission to ward off trouble makers.
Information gathered by theghanareport.com indicates that the security personnel did not block the entrance to the EC nor search persons entering the commission.
On the day the EC is holding a crunch meeting to disclose its direction for a new voters’ register amid the coronavirus outbreak, some opposition parties boycotted the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting.
While the main opposition National Democratic Congress did not turn up for the meeting, the People’s National Convention representative stormed out.
The two parties are protesting the arrangement of the EC to divide political parties into two groups as part of safety protocols in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
PNC National Organiser, Desmond Twumasi Ntow, stormed out of the premises of the EC shortly after the meeting commenced on Tuesday, May 27.
In all 16 parties were scheduled to meet the EC officials on Tuesday, eight at different times of the day. The EC adopted the arrangement due to the restrictions imposed on public gatherings and protocols to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
