Heavy Security as Bawku Peace Talks begin at Manhyia Palace

Security has been tightened at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi as peace talks resume to resolve the long-running Bawku conflict.

Armed police and military officers have been stationed around the palace where the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is hosting mediation sessions over the next three days.

The Bawku Naba, Abugrago Azoka, is in Kumasi for the talks, which mark a significant phase in ongoing efforts to address the deep-rooted tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.

The sessions are expected to focus primarily on the chieftaincy issues that have fueled decades of unrest in the region.

Delegates and key stakeholders from the conflict-affected areas began arriving in Kumasi on Monday in preparation for the talks. Journalists have also gathered outside the palace, eager for updates on any progress made behind closed doors.

The Bawku conflict has taken a heavy toll on lives and livelihoods. Entire communities have been left deserted, and many public and private institutions,  including banks, courts, and health facilities, have either shut down or scaled back operations due to safety concerns.

Despite repeated deployments of security personnel and curfews, peace has remained elusive.

In recent months, top security officials, including the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, have visited the area to speak directly with community members and advocate for peace.

“The people of Bawku deserve to live without fear,” one resident said. “We hope these talks will finally bring lasting calm.”
