A powerful rainstorm on Tuesday evening wreaked havoc across the capital, leading to severe flooding and damage to properties in East Legon.
Other areas in Accra, such as Madina and Okponglo, were not spared.
At the A&C Mall in East Legon, the force of the storm tore solar panels off the carport’s roof, causing extensive damage to parked cars and the structure itself.
About a dozen cars, including some luxury vehicles, were trapped under the fallen roof, with windscreens smashed.
The torrential downpour submerged major roads, leaving many commuters stranded.
Strong winds toppled billboards, some of which crashed onto vehicles and buildings.
Beyond the immediate destruction, the storm has once again highlighted the city’s poor drainage system.
Several flood-prone areas became impassable, with water levels rising dangerously due to blocked gutters and inadequate drainage maintenance.
Residents and business owners are calling for urgent government intervention to prevent future disasters as the rainy season approaches from May to July.
Additionally, concerns have been raised over the weak enforcement of billboard maintenance regulations.
In the past, similar storms have brought down poorly maintained billboards, leading to injuries, deaths and property damage.
Experts are urging authorities to conduct regular inspections and enforce stricter safety standards to prevent such incidents.
As emergency teams work to assess the full extent of the damage, calls are growing for city planners and policymakers to implement long-term solutions to Accra’s recurring flooding and storm-related destruction.
