A devastating fire broke out at a gas filling station near Asufufu, close to Sunyani in the Bono Region, destroying a residential building and several vehicles.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, when a taxi caught fire during refuelling at the station.

According to reports, the fire quickly spread, engulfing a gas tanker and other vehicles present at the fuel station.

Swift action by personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was crucial in containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading further.

GNFS officials worked tirelessly for about three hours to bring the fire under control.

Initial assessments by the Bono Regional Commander of GNFS, ACFO Olivia Ayem, suggested that the fire may have started due to simultaneous fuel discharge from the tanker and the refuelling of a taxi.

ACFO Ayem said that GNFS was not consulted during the fuel discharge process, which could have potentially prevented the fire from escalating.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Meanwhile, Kwadwo Odarno Appiah, the Bono Regional Manager of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), visited the scene and noted concerns over safety measures at some fuel stations.

The NPA has also launched an independent investigation into the incident.
