Health Service orders decongestion at Nyankumasi Ahenkro SHS after 2 die over meningitis
The Ghana Health Service in the Central region has ordered the decongestion of the Nyankumasi Ahenkro Senior High School (SHS) over fears of an outbreak of meningitis.
This comes after two students of the school died of the disease.
Central Regional Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr. Kwabena Sarpong, who confirmed the incident to theghanareport.com said, some cases have also been recorded in the Assin South district.
According to him, five more students are under supervision after they exhibited signs and symptoms of the disease.
He said blood samples of the students had been sent to the laboratory to check for the presence of the disease. The results are expected to be out on Friday.
‘Two students have died and about five more are under supervision. Those are the additional cases we have recorded. There are some other cases in some of the communities so we’re strictly monitoring them,’ he said.
Dr. Sarpong further said that strict measures have been put in place to contain the disease.
He revealed that preliminary investigation showed that over-crowding in the dormitories, hence, their advice to school authorities to decongest the rooms to prevent the spread of the disease.
“We’ve asked them to decongest the dormitories because we realized that was one of the factors which could have contributed to it. We also asked both students and teachers to stay hydrated at all times which means they should take in more fluids and also wash their hands often,” Dr. Sarpong stated.
He, however, revealed, that this was the first time the school had recorded such cases.
