Health Minister pleads for leniency for nurse queried for abusive language at protest

Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has made a request to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to exhibit leniency towards staff nurse, Bernice Aboagye, who was recently questioned for allegedly making derogatory comments about him on social media.

In a statement released on Sunday, October 12, 2025, and signed by Tony Goodman, Head of Health Training Institutions and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, the Ministry acknowledged the receipt of the query letter that has been circulating online and praised the Service for maintaining professional standards and adhering to the Code of Conduct that governs health workers.

Mr. Akandoh, however, called upon the Service to balance justice with compassion, emphasizing the importance of allowing space for constructive criticism and differing opinions within the health sector.

“Both the Minister and the government welcome divergent views and constructive criticism as part of the commitment to fostering tolerance and openness to diverse opinions,” the statement said.

He also urged health workers to voice their concerns in a responsible and respectful manner, avoiding insults, and highlighted that healthy dialogue is essential for the advancement of the sector.

The Ministry further clarified that it does not oppose demonstrations, characterising them as legitimate expressions of frustration and a constitutional right.

However, it warned against the use of abusive language or indiscipline during such events.

Additionally, it reminded health professionals to exercise caution in their public communications and interactions on social media.
