Health Minister-designate outlines plans to export health professionals
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Health Minister-designate, has promised to tackle the high unemployment rate among Ghanaian health professionals by facilitating their migration to countries in need of skilled medical personnel.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee on Friday, January 31, 2025, Mr. Akandoh acknowledged the problem of unemployment in the country and emphasised the need for international partnerships to create more job opportunities abroad.
“The unemployment situation among health professionals is alarming. The challenge largely stems from constraints on the wage bill. Therefore, we need to establish links with other countries to facilitate the migration of these professionals and create employment opportunities for them,” he stated.
The migration of nurses to other countries has become very rampant recently.
General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum attributed the exodus of nurses to harsh economic conditions and the delay in employing fresh graduates.
