The Minister of Fisheries and Member of the Awutu Senya East constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has refuted claims that she masterminded an assault on a journalist with Cape FM.
The journalist, David Kobbina, who works with Cape FM was reportedly attacked on January 4, 2024, following a vetting process for parliamentary aspirants at the Central Regional Coordinating Council in Cape Coast.
He was assaulted by some alleged supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who belong to Hawa Koomson’s team.
But the minister, in a statement denied any involvement in the incident.
“We categorically reject the claim that individuals associated with our team were responsible for this regrettable act. Mavis Hawa Koomson has consistently advocated for a peaceful and constructive political environment, and our team does not endorse or engage in any form of violence.
“We want to make it clear that we do not have any thugs, and no members of our team or supporters, particularly those clad in Hon. Hawa Koomson’s branded T-shirts, were involved in assaulting anybody,” the statement said.
It added that her team “has already reached out to him, expressing concern, offering support, and facilitating any assistance he may require during this challenging time”.
They also called on the Ghana Journalists Network and all stakeholders to allow a thorough investigation into the incident and refrain from premature judgments.
