Handle flight claims with care – Kwesi Aning warns

Security analyst Prof. Kwesi Aning has expressed deep concern about how some legislators handle sensitive security-related information, warning that such disclosures could compromise national security.

His comments follow recent allegations made by Assin South MP Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, who claimed that two suspicious aircraft—a private jet and an air ambulance—left Ghana for Gran Canaria, allegedly carrying large sums of money and possibly illicit substances.

In an interview, Prof. Aning stressed that while parliamentary oversight of security matters is essential, it must be carried out with discretion and professionalism, particularly by those entrusted with security clearance.

“As civil society actors or academics, we can raise certain concerns openly,” he said. “But when you’re a ranking member of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior—with oversight responsibilities and likely access to classified information—you have to approach such matters very differently.”

He also condemned the increasing politicisation of the Defence and Interior Committee, cautioning that it undermines trust and weakens the country’s security framework.

“We need to elevate the conversation around how individuals in sensitive positions handle information,” he added. “Those with security clearance often have access to critical intelligence. That information must be managed with care to protect our national interests.”

Prof. Aning’s remarks come as the allegations by Rev. Fordjour have sparked public concern and speculation about possible drug trafficking and money laundering activities linked to the flights.

However, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has firmly rejected the claims.

In a statement, he confirmed the existence of the flights but said there is no evidence to support any suggestion of criminal activity.
