James Gyakye Quayson is officially the Member of Parliament (MP) of the Assin North constituency after he was stripped earlier following a High Court ruling.

The swearing-in ceremony was held in Parliament today (Tuesday, July 4, 2023).

This follows his re-election on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, and the Electoral Commission’s official communication of the results to the House.

Amidst loud jubilation and chanting of victory songs from members of the minority caucus, the Assin North MP took the oath of office as led by the Speaker of Parliament.

Most members of the majority caucus were absent from the House during the ceremony.

The Parliament House was, however, filled with the presence of the leadership from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Notable among them were the former president, John Dramani Mahama, and his 2020 running mate Prof Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang,

This is the second time Mr Quayson has taken the oath of allegiance to protect the Constitution and the Republic and serve his constituents.

It will be recalled that Mr Quayson was kicked out of Parliament for having dual citizenship before filing his nomination forms, leading to his removal.

This necessitated the highly publicised and keenly contested by-election in Assin North, in which Quayson emerged victorious with 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of valid votes.

His main rival, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured 12,630 votes or 42.15% of valid votes, securing the second position.
