GWCL staff call off strike

The Workers Union of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Ashanti Region has suspended its strike action that culminated in an acute water shortage to businesses and homes in Kumasi in the last few days.

The workers resumed work after the directors of the company and some major stakeholders in solidarity with the public who have had to bear the brunt of their actions, appealed to them.

The operations of GWCL in the region were shut down since last Friday in protest of the demolition of residences and properties occupied by some of its chief managers at the Ridge Residential Area by private developers.

Addressing the Media on December 16, 2024, Vice Chairman of the Public Utility Workers Union (PURC), Emmanuel Okpoti Kodua, said the Union acknowledged the significant challenges faced by the customers during the three-day shutdown of operations and recognised the importance of resuming water supply to prevent further inconvenience and hardship.

“We have just concluded an emergency meeting with a delegation from the board and management of the Company this morning. We have received assurances from the directors of their commitment in addressing the unlawful demolition of the residence of the chief managers in the Ashanti Region and the increasing threat to our properties,” Mr. Okpoti Kodua said.

The directors, he noted, have pledged to take swift and decisive steps to secure the properties under attack and ensure that justice is served.

According to him, while they have temporarily suspended the industrial action, the Union shall closely monitor the progress of the promises made and will not hesitate to resume industrial action should the need arise.

He stated that the strike action was taken in solidarity with the people of Asanteman since they are the stewards and trustees of the assets of the company which they hold in trust for posterity.

He apologised to the residents and customers for the inconveniences that the interruption in service has caused them, adding that it were a necessary evil that they hoped would have been avoided.

“We want customers to be assured that we do not intend to hurt them. Our actions were not meant to inconvenience them, but it was a necessary evil that must be taken for the future of this company and for the future of Asanteman,” he posited.
