Gunmen attack travellers on Accra-Kumasi highway

A  driver, Richard Boadu, has sustained several gun wounds after gunmen on Monday dawn attacked a Kumasi-bound VIP bus at Akyem Anyinasin.

The highway robbers blocked the Akyem Anyinasin stretch of the Accra-Kumasi road at around 1:00 am and at gunpoint robbed a number of vehicles.

Eyewitnesses say the robbers laid ambush and rushed to the middle of the road firing shots as vehicles approached.

The KIA bus which bore the inscription ‘Yesu Dea’ with registration number GE 2397-10 was en route to Kumasi from Accra when the incident happened.

Boadu, who managed to escape, informed the police at the Bunso Forest Gate snap checkpoint.

The police rushed to the scene to salvage the situation.

Acting Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sergeant Francis Gomado, who confirmed the incident said while combing through the area for the suspects, the armed robbers opened fire on them and bolted.

He said efforts are still underway to trail and arrest the suspects.

Some injured passengers were taken to Osiem and Suhum government hospitals.
