Gun shots shake Kotobabi voter registration center
The new voter registration exercise at a centre at Kotobabi in Accra had to be stopped for hours after shooters opened fire close to the area.
The assailants fired several rounds near the Ecole Jean Registration Centre on Wednesday, July 1, and sped off on motorbikes.
This caused chaos at the centre leading to flouting or COVID-19 protocols as applicants at the centre ran in different directions to take cover.
This occurred in the morning, about two hours after the registration started on the second day.
The process resumed after hours, but some people who were at the centre initially refused to return for fear of their lives.
The Daily Graphic reported that the Director of Public Affairs at the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Effia Tenge, said the incident happened about a 100metres away from the centre.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the assailants were three men who arrived in the area using two unregistered motorbikes.
Three empty shells were retrieved from the scene and have been kept as evidence.
The EC’s expectation was the issuance of cards to an average of 100 eligible applicants per day.
Officials who spoke to theghanareport.com were hopeful of making amends in subsequent days.
