Guinea-Bissau government opts to name stadium after Pelé to honour football great

The Guinea-Bissau Government has reached a conclusion to rename one of its national Stadia after Brazilian legend Edson Ariantes Do Nacimiento.

The decision of the country is to name the Bafatá Stadium, the second capital of the country, to Estádio Pelé.

The decision is in response to the call by FIFA President Gianni Infantino for member countries to rename one of their national stadia after the Brazilian legend.

“We are going to ask every country in the world to name one of their football stadiums with the name of Pelé,” the FIFA President said in an interview last week.

Infantino added, “I am here with a lot of emotion, sadness, but also with a smile because he gave us so many smiles. As FIFA, we will pay a tribute to the ‘King’ and we ask the whole world to observe a minute of silence.”

Having received the call from the FIFA president very well, the Guinea-Bissau Government has decided to comply.

At a Council of Ministers meeting in Bissau, under the chairmanship of the Guinean head of state, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, the country opted to name Bafatá Stadium after Pele.
