GTEC directs St Vincent College of Education to reopen
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the management of the St. Vincent College of Education to reopen the school a week after its closure.
On Monday, January 13, the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, ordered the closure of the college following a disagreement over the appointment of a new principal for the institution.
He issued the directive after the school’s governing board allegedly ignored his recommendation for the position.
But speaking to the media on Tuesday, January 21, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Director-General of GTEC, said the commission has reached an amicable agreement with the Ya-Na to reopen the college.
He assured that the college will be opened on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
“I want to assure the public and stakeholders in tertiary education that the issues have been resolved, and normalcy should return to the institution by tomorrow,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer for the Ya-Naa, Musah Yakubu, clarified that the directive for the institution’s closure was not informed by personal interest.
He added that it was only a temporary measure to restore calm in St. Vincent College of Education while discussions were ongoing.
“His Majesty wanted to restore calm so he could engage with the Director-General of GTEC. The discussions have now been successfully concluded, and everything has been resolved. We are hopeful that Saint Vincent will resume its operations as planned,” Mr. Yakubu assured.
