GRTCC demands urgent repairs on Accra–Kumasi Highway
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) is urging the Ministry of Roads and Highways to take immediate steps to improve the condition of the Accra–Kumasi Highway and other major roads following a deadly crash that left 16 people dead.
The victims, all young members of the Obogu Saviour Church, lost their lives in what officials describe as one of the most tragic accidents in recent months.
GRTCC says deteriorating road conditions across the country, especially on key highways, are contributing to Ghana’s high rate of traffic-related deaths.
The Council is demanding swift intervention to prevent further loss of life.
According to the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), there were 13,489 traffic crashes between January and December 2024, resulting in 2,494 deaths and over 15,000 injuries.
Although this marks a slight decrease from the previous year, the figures remain concerning.
General Secretary of GRTCC, Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, stressed the urgency of the situation.
“The road network is bad. The government should prioritise it and fix it. If it’s not a total reconstruction, at least deal with the difficult areas and bring them to a standard that can be usable,” he said.
He also called for dual carriageways on major routes, as well as basic improvements like clearer road markings and quicker pothole repairs.
The GRTCC believes that targeted action and infrastructure upgrades are critical to reversing Ghana’s road safety crisis and saving lives.
