GRIDCo probes substation fault behind Tema power outage

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) is investigating an electrical fault that disrupted the power supply in parts of Tema late Monday night.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the company reported that the incident occurred at approximately 10:58 p.m. on Monday, February 23, at its Smelter II substation in Tema.

The disturbance affected electricity supply to several customers within the city, leaving homes and businesses temporarily without power.

According to GRIDCo, engineers were swiftly deployed to assess the situation and determine the cause of the fault.

The company indicated that efforts are ongoing to restore supply to the affected areas while technical teams continue diagnostic checks on the substation.

“Our engineers are currently diagnosing the cause of the disturbance and working diligently to restore power supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible,” the statement noted.

For many residents and business operators in Tema, the outage brought activities to an abrupt halt, disrupting household routines and commercial operations.

Some residents said they were forced to rely on alternative lighting sources while waiting for the supply to be restored.

GRIDCo apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured customers that every effort is being made to resolve the issue promptly.

The company also pledged to provide further updates as the investigation progresses and stability is fully restored to the affected parts of the city.
