Greater Accra tops firearm surrenders under gun amnesty

Greater Accra has emerged as the leading region in firearms surrendered under Ghana’s ongoing Gun Amnesty Programme, according to the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons.

The voluntary initiative, which began on December 1, is giving individuals a chance to register or hand in illegal or unregistered weapons without fear, helping to quietly remove guns from communities.

The update was shared on Friday, December 26, 2025, by NACSA Executive Secretary Dr Bonaa during a visit to the National Mosque in Accra.

The visit formed part of a broader outreach effort aimed at encouraging more people, particularly within the Muslim community, to participate before the programme ends on January 15, 2026.

At the mosque, Dr Bonaa met the National Chief Imam, whose influence he believes can help shift attitudes around gun possession and community safety.

The Chief Imam has agreed to support the initiative by encouraging voluntary compliance and promoting peace-centred dialogue among worshippers and leaders.

The programme comes at a time when concerns about small arms continue to affect neighbourhood safety.

By creating a safe window for people to surrender weapons without punishment, authorities hope to reduce the risk of violence and accidental harm, while rebuilding trust between communities and security agencies.

Security officials say cooperation has been encouraging so far, particularly in Greater Accra, where consistent engagement with local leaders and residents appears to be making a difference.

Police have again assured the public that the process is confidential and free from arrest or questioning.

Dr Bonaa told journalists, “The Greater Accra Region is currently leading in terms of arms surrendered under the amnesty programme, with the support of the security commanders.”
