The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has announced plans to pay 35 selected workers from the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) to restart operations on the Kojokrom–Takoradi railway line.Tourism promotion services
This initiative aims to revive passenger and freight services along the Western Railway Corridor, which have been suspended for nearly two years due to unpaid salary arrears exceeding 20 million cedis.
During a meeting with management in Takoradi, Dr. Frederick Appoh, Chief Executive Officer of GRDA, emphasised that the Authority cannot continue paying workers who are not operational. He requested that GRCL submit the names of 35 staff members to be paid directly by GRDA on a monthly basis to facilitate the resumption of services.
“We cannot sit idle and wait for the government to pay us; we will keep accumulating. We have to make a decision on how to rationalize and enforce operations. This must be done. We are here to reactivate the railway that runs through Kojokrom. It is up to management to provide the 35 people who will work on it, and those people will be paid on a monthly basis,” Dr. Appoh said.
The Managing Director of GRCL, Dr. Engineer Michael Aryetei Adjei, welcomed the proposal, describing it as a practical step toward restoring activity on the line. “It is almost two years now; this cannot continue. With the 35 people, I will task the HR, civil engineering, and operations departments to ensure they are properly
deployed,” he stated.
During a visit to the Takoradi Port, Dr. Appoh also called for the redevelopment of new loading areas for manganese and bauxite, noting that existing facilities have deteriorated and require urgent upgrades to support freight operations.
The intervention is expected to pave the way for the full resumption of services along the Western Railway Corridor, addressing a major operational setback for GRCL and improving transport efficiency in the region.
