GRA to roll out national tax education campaign for informal sector

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is set to launch a nationwide tax education campaign targeting the informal sector, aiming to simplify tax information and boost compliance.

Speaking at the 3rd SWIT Conference in Accra, Elsie Apau, Technical Advisor to the Commissioner-General, explained that the campaign will use clear, everyday language to help traders, artisans, and market women understand their tax responsibilities.

“No jargon, no grammar, just simple explanations. We want everyone, from Makola to Abossey Okai, to see how paying tax connects to better roads, schools, and clinics,” she said.

The initiative seeks to broaden Ghana’s tax base by demystifying taxation for people often left out of the formal system.

SWIT Chairperson, Esi Sam, also emphasised the importance of respectful engagement.

“It’s not just about collecting taxes, but how we talk to people. When people feel respected, they’re more likely to comply.”

Adding to the conversation, Telecel Ghana CEO Patricia Obo-Nai urged the use of tech tools like USSD and mobile platforms to reach low-tech users in the informal sector.

“Innovation must include everyone. Let’s not assume everyone has a smartphone or speaks fluent English. Even basic phones can bridge the gap.”

This year’s SWIT Conference focused on: “Leveraging Technology to Unlock the Revenue Potential of the Informal Sector for National Development”.
