The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has initiated an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint on February 19, 2025, resulting in injuries to a bystander.
In a statement released on February 20, the GRA reassured the public that a thorough investigation is being conducted to uncover what transpired.
The authority in the statement also extended its sympathies to those affected and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of all involved parties.
According to the statement, Customs officers at the checkpoint had received intelligence regarding a suspected smuggling attempt involving a Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan coming from Togo. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the occupants fled, abandoning the car.
In their efforts to apprehend the suspects, the officers discharged warning shots; however, a bystander was unintentionally struck by a stray bullet.
The injured individual was promptly transported to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital and is currently receiving treatment, as confirmed by the GRA.
Reaffirming its dedication to protecting national revenue and securing Ghana’s borders, the GRA pledged to implement measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
Earlier, an eyewitness in an interview identified the victim as Alex, an engineer working with the South Tongu District Assembly.
He is currently at the Comboni Hospital receiving medical care.
