GPL: This is just the Beginning- Basake Holy Stars Coach after beating Kotoko
Basake Holy Stars Football Club assistant head coach Johnson Smith says the club’s big win over Kumasi Asante Kotoko is just the beginning. Smith until recently, served as assistant head coach of Nations FC.
He made this comment after overseeing Basake’s impressive 2-1 win over Kotoko for the club’s second win of the 2025-2026 Ghana Premier League season. The club has two wins, three draws and six losses in 11 games.
Richmond Somiah scored Basake’s first via a simple finish four yards from goal in the 49th minute but Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku scored in the 53rd minute to tie the game.
Prince Tweneboah scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute when he bent the ball beyond Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara after getting played in on goal.
Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito claimed his side shouldn’t have lost the tie based on how well they played but after picking up the important win over the Porcupine Warriors, Johnson Smith was in bullish mood.
“This is just the beginning so I don’t have to talk much. This is my first match so I don’t want to blab too much…so today’s match I’m happy that we’ve won so we will continue” Johnson Smith said.

Losing to Kotoko means the Kumasi based club has just a win in its last five league games.
