GPL: Legon Cities thrash AshantiGold to move above drop zone

Legon Cities Football Club produced a brilliant comeback display in the Ghana Premier League as they came from behind twice to beat AshantiGold SC 5-2 in an outstanding matchday 10 fixture at the Accra Sports stadium on Friday.

The struggling Royals welcomed the Miners to the Accra Sports Stadium in search of their second win of the current campaign.

The Miners in the first half of the game took the lead twice in the 7th and 32nd minute of the game courtesy of Yaw Annor but the Royals were able to restore parity at both instances before recess.

Ashanti Gold became weakened in the second half when the engine of their midfield, Appiah McCarthy was forced out of the game through injury of which Legon Cities took advantage to control the game till Baba Mahama put them ahead just four minutes into the second half.

David Cudjoe, after assisting Baba Mahama to score the 3rd goal for Cities, rose to put the game beyond repairs for the visitors when he struck in quick succession to make it 5-2 for the Royals.

The visitors had the opportunity to reduce the deficit after a penalty was awarded to them but Annor failed to find the back of the as goalkeeper Dauda saved it.

Legon Cities ended the game with 10 men after Nicholas Mensah was sent off in the 90th minute.

The win lifts the Royals out of the relegation zone into the 15th position, while AshantiGold remain in 2nd position.
