Gov’t to unveil presidential policy on football – Akufo Addo
The seemingly endless streak of setbacks at the senior level of Ghana football would be met with a presidential policy on the sport, arguably the strongest declaration yet by a president of the republic in the last three decades.
The failures in Ghana football are up to the neck of countrymen and women who want a drastic turnaround in fortunes with respect to the decline in football at all levels.
The Black Stars of Ghana were eliminated in the first rounds of the African Cup of Nations, AFCON, in 2021 and 2023, and these were no different from other first-round exits in 2006 and 1984. Since 1982 when Ghana last won the title, it had been a litany of one setback to the other, and the nation’s lack of success in top-flight football has reflected the changes in the dynamics of African football.
Egypt and Cameroon, on seven and five titles, reveal the tottering nature of Ghana which had raced to a lead of four-time unprecedented titles 44 years ago. Ghana’s record has been broken and overtaken, with others like Nigeria, Algeria, and the Ivory Coast on the brink of going at par.
The President of Ghana says the solution to the recurrent or endless crisis is the return to the basics through the organization of football at all levels. He said the provision of dozens of Artificial Turfs in the nooks and crannies on the map shows a government’s preparedness in quietness to tackle the challenge from the root.
The President would not take his seat until he had shown an appreciation to the Black Stars for their exploits in the 2010 World Cup South Africa hosted.
