The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has directed a newly inaugurated 7-member technical committee to consult extensively with stakeholders in the power distribution sector and deliver a comprehensive plan for the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) within one month.
Comprising energy experts and key industry players, the committee is tasked with developing strategies to transition ECG to private sector management.
The goal is to enhance efficiency and improve service delivery, ensuring the company meets the demands of Ghana’s growing energy needs.
Speaking to the media after the committee’s inauguration, Mr Jinapor stressed that the government had no plans to sell ECG outright.
“Let me assure the nation, we are not selling ECG. Our focus is on involving the private sector while prioritising local participation,” he explained.
He emphasised the importance of transparency, stakeholder engagement, and accountability in the process.
“The committee must consult widely—workers, unions, consumers, and all relevant parties. We’ve given them a one-month deadline to complete this work. The energy sector is in crisis, and urgent action is needed to prevent its collapse,” he stated.
Mr. Jinapor reiterated the government’s commitment to a competitive and transparent approach that prioritises the long-term stability and sustainability of the energy sector.
