Gov’t partners Norway to develop Comprehensive Teacher Policy – Bawumia

Government is collaborating with the Norwegian Teacher Initiative to develop a Comprehensive Teacher Policy for Ghana, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has hinted.

The policy which will be implemented through the Ministry of Education and its agencies will focus on the welfare of teachers, their professional growth and the needed competitive urge for the Ghanaian teacher in the global market space.

Speaking during the 2019 Ghana Teacher Prize grand durbar in Kumasi on Saturday, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia disclosed that the plan is part of government’s commitment of ensuring quality education in the country.

“In line with the government’s efforts to empower teachers to better their social and professional lives, the Ministry of Education and its agencies with support from development partners is collaborate with the Norwegian Teacher Initiative to develop a comprehensive teacher policy. Beyond improving access, government is committed to ensuring quality, relevant education that will produce confident -skilled global citizens ready and able to compete with their counterparts anywhere in the world.”

International bodies including the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have advocated for countries to develop a policy that could help them enhance evidence based national teacher policy by the year 2030.

This they believe will serve as a catalyst for policy and decision making institutions to possess an evidence-based national teacher policy as an integrated component of national education sector reforms that are in sync with their national development strategies.

A strong case has also been made for guidelines such as teacher recruitment and retention, teacher education, deployment, career path, teacher employment and working conditions, teacher reward and remuneration, teacher standards, teacher accountability and school governance.
