Lawyer for Bawku Naaba, Maxwell Ziyerley Agbambilla, has appealed to the government to hasten processes to address the escalating conflicts at Bawku in the Upper East Region.
His appeal follows the renewed disturbances triggered by the return of Seidu Abagre, who was controversially enskinned as Bawku Naaba in February 2023.
Despite the absence of legal recognition for his title, his presence has worsened tensions between rival factions, leading to multiple clashes and the deaths of 16 people.
Commenting on the development, Mr Agbambilla stated, “On this matter, I think the government must act and act swiftly because we have identified the cause of the problem from day one.”
He added, “To my brothers down there, I think that continuing to jeopardize our lives and to put our lives at risk is not worth it because, at the end of the day, it doesn’t benefit anybody in any way.”
Meanwhile, the chieftaincy minister has cautioned the feuding Bawku factions to stop politicking and the blame games with the sensitive issue at hand.
“I will implore all sides to stop the conspiracy theories going around and the blame games and keep calm and allow the government to deal with the security and chieftaincy issues therefore. No one should play politics with this sensitive matter and I will continue to engage my colleagues in the political arena from all sides to work with the government to resolve the current problems and work towards lasting peace in the area.”
Mr Asamoah Boateng further urged the traditional leaders in the area to refrain from acts that may escalate the conflict.
“I strongly call on the traditional leaders from both sides to refrain from any act that will escalate the situation.”
