Government to reintroduce PTA in public schools

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced plans by the government to reintroduce the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) to play a key role in managing education throughout the country.

He said this during the launch of the Okaikwei South Public Schools renovation and upgrade project.

Mr. Iddrisu emphasised that reintegrating the PTA would significantly contribute to educational institutions’ efforts in nurturing quality human capital for the nation.

“I am particularly happy to announce that PTAs will be introduced back into the management of education under the presidency of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, for parents and teachers to work together to improve learning outcomes in our educational institutions. And for PTAs to support our educational institutions to produce quality human capital for the country,” he announced.

It will be recalled that educational bodies like the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) in 2024 called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately reverse the name Parent Association (PA) imposed on the organisation to its original name, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

The council vehemently opposed the cancellation of the PTA.

According to the council, the new name was not the least welcome, as the generality of its members viewed it as an imposition.
